Begin Vegan
I began eating as a vegan in December 2006. I'm sharing about my journey as a lot of people have asked me “Why?!”
My grandparents lived on a farm and raised vegetables and animals for food. I was aware of where food came from from an early age. From 6th-8th grade, my family also raised vegetables and animals . I participated in the process of raising animals, killing and preparing them for food. I was very young and did not have a choice to not participate and this process broke my heart. I still cry when I think about it, as the images are still vivid in my mind. When I was 18 I became a vegetarian for 13 years.
After that I began eating poultry. Even while doing so, I found myself being unable to prepare dishes or look at raw meat without a sense of uneasiness. It was a rare occassion that I could actually buy and cook it myself.
In December, I spent a month researching the practices of meat and dairy farming and found myself weeping at my computer screen. I know the people who are treating these animals in this way also need prayers. I found these people doing similar behaviors that terrorists do to people in captivity - and I became ill. No living being should have to endure such suffering. I looked at my little Toby dog, who I adore with all my heart, and knew that from this day forward I would honor my love for him and all animals by being vegan.
I may not be perfect every day but I'm perfectly willing to try! My spirit is happy that I made this choice for myself. It's right for me.
I found this explanation from LearningtoListen page which resonates a lot with how I feel. I am not preaching to anyone rather sharing what's in my heart. Namaste.

You don't have to be a vegetarian to live a mindful life, you don't have to enjoy being in nature or love the smell of flowers to be fully awake; but these things do often support a deeper appreciation and enjoyment of our time on this planet - not to mention that to live in a softer and less impactful way ultimately allows generations to come to also enjoy what each of us has had the pleasure to experience. In some ways it does come down to the simple distinction between selfish or selfless. What motivates each of us to live in the way that we do?
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
-M.K. Gandhi
“True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Humanity's true moral test, its fundamental test, consists of its attitude toward those who are at its mercy: animals.”
-Milan Kundera
